  • Why should I choose to build a custom home?

    When you entrust Stortz Custom Homes to build your custom home, you will get EXACTLY what you want for the price that you can afford. You are not “put in a box” regarding what you can or can't have or be given limited selections to choose from. This is your home, and it will be treated accordingly. We assist you in figuring out your needs and wants. This is very helpful from our experience as home builders because this plays into the overall cost of your home.

  • Do you charge for house plans?

    As dependable, trustworthy home builders, we believe in paying it forward. After the initial conversations, we will have a designer draft up a preliminary plan for free.

  • What is included in the building contract?

    Our contract price includes the complete construction of your home including well or septic systems if needed. Your lot purchase and landscaping, including a concrete or asphalt driveway, are separate costs that are not included. See our spec sheet for typical specifications we include in our homes.

  • What location do you build in?

    We provide services in Washington, Ozaukee, and parts of Waukesha and Dodge Counties.

  • How can we track the construction process?

    We offer web-based expediting that allows you to follow along with the entire build, including schedules, photos, documents, and more as the home progresses.

  • How much is a custom home?

    We do not have a fixed price for the homes that we build, because as a custom home builder, we never build the same home twice. As a general idea, ranch homes are currently about $290-315 per sq. ft. Two-story homes are around $280-305 per sq ft. Pricing varies depending on the taste and amenities someone may or may not want. However, your custom home will be bid out exactly as you desire, so all numbers are known prior to moving forward with the build.

  • How long does it take to build?

    As experienced custom home builders, we expect house construction to take seven to nine months from start to finish.

  • What time of year should I build a home?

    Stortz Custom Homes builds houses all year long. We make every effort to have your home weather-tight by January so we can continue throughout the winter months. If begin building a home in spring, you can anticipate occupancy by late fall. If you start a home in late fall, you can anticipate occupancy in late spring.

  • What is a change order?

    A change order is any change (typically a material item or an allowance item) that differs from the original contract terms. Many times, change orders are voluntarily done by our customers, due to an item that they came across that they have determined that they must have after the contract was signed. However, change orders can also result in a credit back to you, the customer.  An example of this is if an allowance is not completely utilized or you as the customer decided on a more economical selection.


    At Stortz Custom Homes, change orders are not all that common. Stortz Custom Homes puts a considerable amount of upfront time with you as the customer to ensure that the house bid that we obtain for you has exactly what you want in it. You will not get surprises. Instead, you'll only get honest, clear, and effective communication.
